Destruction,

I promise you a new beginning...Peace and

Leon: Is that so…? I guess it is. I'll buy that kind of story.
D: Yup, yup!
<It is SO disturbing to see D this nervous.>
Frame 5
Leon: Well, I'm waking up.
<in Matsuri-sama's handwriting> I'm not the kind of man who sells
oil. -- This is a colloquialism which dates back to the Edo era. The
equivalent/meaning is someone who intentionally wastes time. And BOY
is Leon nervous at having D in his dream...this is the exact look he
gets on his face in "Dracula", when D asks him to spend the night at
the shop.>

<I did my best with the katakana of what is obviously a scientific
name for a prehistoric animal I've never heard of. Anyone who knows
what this creature's Latin name is, or what a "hera" or "hela" deer
might be, jump right in.>
Frame 2
Leon: Th…this big a deer—I've never seen or heard of such a thing
before!
[pan, pan—-pat, pat]
D: Well, that's because……now, all of this type has become extinct.
Frame 4
Leon: …what…? What was that? <in Akino-sensei's handwriting> Pardon?
Frame 5
D: …Mr. Detective, do you know approximately how many types of living
things exist now on this planet?
Leon: (confused voice) …hunh?! You don't mean for me to answer that
kind of thing out of nowhere, do you?
<This next bit is why I will always love Akino-sensei. She is so
amazing. Such a wonderful story-teller as well as visual artist. And
I love her way of thinking. It may be D speaking, but he often merely
voices what Matsuri-sama feels. And she is so beautifully eloquent,
at times, no one but D could be her voice. Our translation doesn't
even do the original Japanese justice, here.>
PAGE 179

of this, near some of the bigger coastal cities in Japan and a few
other places around the world, they are filling the ocean directly
adjacent to the coast with garbage, which they then build up and
compact to form more land and, supposedly, increase the size of the
country in order to expand construction, etc. As you might imagine,
this is not environmentally sound.> ……in some zoo,

Frame 3 - 4
D: Mr. Detectiiive! It is dangerouuus!
Frame 5
Leon: No worries, no worries.
D: <in Matsuri-sama's handwriting> (sweat-dropping voice) What are

Frame 6
Leon: (mouth full) This looks grotesque to the eye, but it doesn't

eyes slitted like a cat's? Good question.>
[bichi, bichi-—flop, flop]
Leon: Hunh? Oh—
Frame 5
Leon: This wound is just a scratch. If I lick it, it'll heal.
<in handwriting> Oh! It got away!
<Why is Leon showing off and doing so much masculine posturing, as if
D were Cindy Crawford? Another good question.>
[bochan—-sploosh]
D: (worried voice) B-but, if germs get in……
Frame 6
Leon: Don't worry about such a tiny thing! Because it's just a dream,
anyway.
<This is a wonderful exprеssion, on both faces.>
PAGE 185
Frame 1 – Frame 2
D: I will say you're a bold, adaptable person.
Frame 2
D: The type who could survive on a desert island.
Frame 3
Leon: Yup! Even if I was the very last person, I'd survive!
Frame 5
D: (upset voice) Does that mean you're telling me that, for the sake
of your own survival, you wouldn't mind killing another person?
Frame 6
Leon: …D? <next to the kanji for "count">
<"But, Honey, we were having a moment...">
Frame 7
D: If there were only two of you left alive, and one of the two of
you could not be saved, would you kill that one last person, too?!

Frame 1
D: (yelling) And then, when you're hungry, do you intend to even go
so far as greedily devouring the corpse of the companion you killed?!
Frame 2
D: (yelling) Having done so, would it still be a victory?!
<Time out. What the hell is D's problem here? We may never know.
Obviously a big, big issue with him. I'm guessing a past incarnation
experience. It is SO out of character for him to be upset by the mere
idea of something which just follows the law of nature/survival. This
is such fertile fanfic ground, because it could be ANYTHING.
Your homework assignment, if you choose to accept it, is to figure
out WHY D is freaking out so badly about this. I mean, he's
hysterical. Leon does the right thing, I think.>

[kachi, kachi—-flick, flick]
D: (recovering voice) Me either…
<Denial is a beautiful thing, my friends.>
Frame 4
D: This is why I hate Americans!
Leon: (angry voice) Hunh?!
D: <in Matsuri-sama's handwriting> Please do not flick your ashes
here.
Frame 5
Leon: (yelling) You're speaking bluntly all of a sudden!
D: (whining) Look! Again, you immediately resort to violence!
<This is so wrong. And warrants all the head-bops and UFO's in the
face Leon gets later in the series.>
Frame 6
<D is thinking to himself, here. It comes out aloud, because he can't
control his thoughts in this setting. If only Leon knew the OTHER
mental rants D goes on about him...>
D: I think he's an adaptable person, a Realist, but sometimes too
much of an optimist, <this is the Japanese way of saying "air-headed"
or "stupid". Apparently, only a complete idiot fails to realise the
horror of the universe and be depressed by it.> like a single-celled
organism. A cheap sense of Justice, self-gratification, and heroism,
all rolled into one. As if he alone were Heaven's ordained savage
predator!
Leon: WHAT the HELL?!
Frame 7
D: (bitchy uke voice) You should be put on display in a museum as the
perfect example of the American specimen.
Leon: (yelling) It'd be bad to stuff me! I have bullet scars in my
belly, my shoulder, and my leg!!
<The look on his face here is kind of cute, in a scary chibi way.>
PAGE 188
Frame 1
<Racism warning. Come on. Are you really surprised? Doesn't it
explain quite a bit?>
Leon: (yelling) I have a mountain of reasons why I hate you Chinese
vermin!
<the word he actually uses is "mushi"—insects. I've seen this term,
when used to describe human beings, translated anywhere
from "nuisance" to "little shit". I think "vermin" fits best for how
Leon's using it here.>
To begin with, you sons of bitches are—
<the curse-word he uses is "teme", which is another of the many
Japanese words for "you", which can be used as an insult. I would
have used "bastard", but that's how I've been translating "yarou", so
I chose "son of a bitch". Feel free to insert the derogatory term of
your choice.>

Guard 1: Detective?
Guard 2: It's the truth?
Frame 3
Leon: (shouting) Hah! That's right! What about the drug deal?! The
Chinese Mafia?! The syndicate guys, where are they?!
Frame 4
Guard 2: What are talking about?
Leon: (yelling) YOU're probably an accomplice!
Frame 5
Guard 2: The count was here to meditate.
Frame 6
Leon: Medi…tate?!
Frame 7
Guard 2: Right. Once a week, he holds a memorial for the souls of all
recently extinct animals. For self-enlightenment.
<in Matsuri-sensei's handwriting> It's a violation to allow someone
in the museum after business hours, but he gives us sweets.
Frame 7 – Frame 8
Guard 2: It's a Chinese religious custom--wasn't it?
Frame 8
D: (embarrassed voice) …yes, well. That was such a tiny thing.

Leon: (thinking) Shit~~! It's totally suspicious. That tea was fine—
that's right. There was that incense burner, too—
Frame 4
Leon: (thinking) Oh~~ But how did I fire three times at a State
Museum exhibit, half-asleep? [sigh] Tomorrow, I'm sure to feel the
chief's wrath~~ <the literal translation here is "the chief's thunder

<in Akino-sama's handwriting> I'll have to write a report~~
<Everyone point and laugh at Leon! *points* Hahahahahaha!>
Frame 5
Leon: --um

<You heard it here first, folks. D does not click, clack, when he

D: What is it?
Frame 2
Leon: (blushing voice) Oh…no. That is…A little while ago, when I hit
you. That…that was wrong……of me.
<*keels over dead from shock*>
Frame 3
D: Whatever you saw in your dream does not concern me.
<Creepy, creepy face here. Creepy.>
Frame 5
Leon: …oh. Ohh……
(thinking) I knew that was a dream, I guess.
Frame 6
Leon: (thinking) Again, like always, it's the mask of that fake

Frame 7
Leon: (thinking) Surprised, angry, laughing.

D: We are nearing the petshop. How would you like some tea? It is the
finest quality herbal tea, mixed by hand.
<Sounds like "apology accepted," to me>
Leon: (surprised voice) Wha?…Ohh.

Frame 1
Leon: As a matter of fact, my belly's empty, too.
D: All right, all right.
(thinking) But you will leave, nevertheless.

Frame 2
D: (thinking) Without looking back, even once more.
Frame 3
D: (thinking) And then I shall be abandoned.

Leon: What?

Destruction,

I promise you a new beginning...Peace and

Leon: (yelling) That's my question to ask! For sure, you were making

Frame 4
Leon: (yelling) The Chinese Mafia? The South American smuggling
organization? Where are they?!

Frame 5
D: Mr. Detective
Leon: What?

D: This is a "dream".
Leon: Hunh?
D: You are dreaming now.
Leon: Dr……dream?

D: While shadowing a big-time criminal, you fell asleep on stake-out.
Frame 3
Leon: Well, you mean you're a character in my dream, too?
D: Right, right!
Frame 4
Leon: Is that so…? I guess it is. I'll buy that kind of story.
D: Yup, yup!
<It is SO disturbing to see D this nervous.>
Frame 5
Leon: Well, I'm waking up.
<in Matsuri-sama's handwriting> I'm not the kind of man who sells
oil. -- This is a colloquialism which dates back to the Edo era. The
equivalent/meaning is someone who intentionally wastes time. And BOY
is Leon nervous at having D in his dream...this is the exact look he
gets on his face in "Dracula", when D asks him to spend the night at
the shop.>
D: (panicking voice) Wait a minute!
Frame 6
D: (thinking) Until the incense runs out in 2 or 3 hours it's
impossible to wake up--
Frame 6 – Frame 7
D: (nervous voice) W…what a waste of all your effort in getting here
that would be. Stay a little while more and enjoy a picnic.
Frame 7
Leon: (yelling) A picnic?!

gentle temperament.
Leon: (yelling) This LITTLE one?!
D: Yes. This is not even full-grown yet.

D: …Behind you……
Leon: What?
Frame 6

PAGE 178
Frame 1
Leon: (freaked out voice) What IS this, a horse with antlers--?
Frame 1 – Frame 2
D: This is Selvarcus, an ancestor of the hela deer.
Our translation doesn't
even do the original Japanese justice, here.>
PAGE 179
Frame 1
D: Between all of the particular classifications of mammals, birds,
fish, reptiles, flowers, trees, and fungi, there are approximately 5
million species. Of those, more than 300 species are eradicated each
year.
Frame 1- 2
D: In other words, one species each day. Even now—
Frame 3
D: In the desert savanna, in the clear-cut tropical rainforest, in
the landfill coastal reclamation <for those of you who haven't heard
of this, near some of the bigger coastal cities in Japan and a few
other places around the world, they are filling the ocean directly
adjacent to the coast with garbage, which they then build up and
compact to form more land and, supposedly, increase the size of the
country in order to expand construction, etc. As you might imagine,
this is not environmentally sound.> ……in some zoo,

Frame 3
D: ……as I said, it is a dream.
PAGE 181
D: This is a reminiscence. The Earth is dreaming of a longed-for past.

English.>

Frame 2
Leon: What? Even in a dream, I get hungry, I guess.
D: <in Akino-sensei's handwriting> (thinking) Dramatic tension—broken
by a triviality like food!
<He is such a drag queen!>
Frame 3 - 4
D: Mr. Detectiiive! It is dangerouuus!
Frame 5
Leon: No worries, no worries.
D: <in Matsuri-sama's handwriting> (sweat-dropping voice) What are
you, a monkey…?
<This is hysterical!>
Frame 6
Leon: (mouth full) This looks grotesque to the eye, but it doesn't

<Then he's totally wigging at the sight of Leon's blood. Why are his
eyes slitted like a cat's? Good question.>
[bichi, bichi-—flop, flop]
Leon: Hunh? Oh—
Frame 5
Leon: This wound is just a scratch. If I lick it, it'll heal.
<in handwriting> Oh! It got away!
<Why is Leon showing off and doing so much masculine posturing, as if
D were Cindy Crawford? Another good question.>
[bochan—-sploosh]
D: (worried voice) B-but, if germs get in……
Frame 6
Leon: Don't worry about such a tiny thing! Because it's just a dream,
anyway.
<This is a wonderful exprеssion, on both faces.>
PAGE 185
Frame 1 – Frame 2
D: I will say you're a bold, adaptable person.
Frame 2
D: The type who could survive on a desert island.
Frame 3
Leon: Yup! Even if I was the very last person, I'd survive!
Frame 5
D: (upset voice) Does that mean you're telling me that, for the sake
of your own survival, you wouldn't mind killing another person?
Frame 6
Leon: …D? <next to the kanji for "count">
<"But, Honey, we were having a moment...">
Frame 7
D: If there were only two of you left alive, and one of the two of
you could not be saved, would you kill that one last person, too?!
PAGE 186

Leon: (angry voice) Either way, I never want any part of going to a
desert island with you.
[kachi, kachi—-flick, flick]
D: (recovering voice) Me either…
<Denial is a beautiful thing, my friends.>

D: Without a mother to give them food, these young ones can't survive.
[myaa—-meow]
Frame 5
D: It is not allowed for human beings to raise them, instead.
Frame 6
D: That is the law of this forest.

Frame 1 – Frame 2
Leon: (yelling) Are you saying you intended to get eaten instead of
that deer? That's bogus! Are you an Indian monk?!
<I'm not quite sure here if Matsuri-sensei is trying to show us how
dumb Leon is that he doesn't know what religion a person with this
belief system is or if she herself couldn't think of the name.
There's no specific religion mentioned, only "India" and "monk".>

Leon: ……I don't regret what I did.
Frame 4
Leon: Even if this guy was the pet of Her Majesty the Queen, and you
were a brutal murderer who had been convicted of hundreds of crimes,

Frame 6
Leon: I couldn't sit quietly by and watch you be killed and eaten
before my eyes, get what I mean?

Frame 1
Leon: But don't misunderstand. I saved you is so that I can arrest
you and throw you in jail.
Frame 2
Leon: For the sake of all the people who've died because you sold
them strange pets.
Frame 3
Leon: For selling them, you should be judged by due process of the
law.
Frame 4
D: ……judge…?
Frame 4 – Frame 5
D: ME…?
<Drag queen alert>
Frame 6
D: Who on earth is there to pass judgement?

D: In this world, as I said, there are only two people. You and I.

D: What? Are you half-asleep?
Leon: (freaking out voice) Half…half-asleep…?

trick on Leon here. And it WORKS!>
Guard 1: Detective?
Guard 2: It's the truth?
Frame 3
Leon: (shouting) Hah! That's right! What about the drug deal?! The

Leon: (yelling) YOU're probably an accomplice!

Guard 2: The count was here to meditate.

Guard 2: Right. Once a week, he holds a memorial for the souls of all
recently extinct animals. For self-enlightenment.
